Excited for Plovdiv 2019 opening weekend? We know you are! There will be many events taking over the city – actually, there will be so much to see and do that it can even get a little overwhelming and confusing. This is why we created a short guide with the top 6 highlights from the programme – we know you’ll love them!

The most attractive and anticipated highlight of the programme is the ‘We Are All Colors’ show, but it’s not the only event worth attending. Here’s how to make the most out of the opening weekend (11-13 January)!

Why not participate in something truly memorable? More than 1500 participants from Bulgaria and abroad are going to recreate the emblematic motto of Plovdiv ‘’Together’’. The show will combine music, light and dance in the most amazing and creative way!

2. Go on a journey through time with the exhibition ‘SMOKE. Tobacco Stories‘

The exhibition presents unique archives and photography material, videos, films and literature. The studies of Bulgarian artists into the history of Plovdiv through its relationship with the tobacco industry is something worth exploring.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2019, the only travelling collection of original fragments of the Berlin Wall is coming to Plovdiv! Visitors will get the chance to see the works of the predecessors of the Berlin street art movement.

4. Explore the wonders of modern science and technology in the ‘Eureka!’ travelling exhibition

Ever wondered how the X-ray or the Morse code machine were invented? This is one of the funniest and most interactive modules of the entire programme! Adults and children can take part in several workshops and learn about some of the most interesting scientific and technological discoveries.

5. Enjoy a moving, heartfelt play about love with the ‘Eurydice’ theatre performance

Theatre lovers will be able to see ‘Eurydice,’ a performance of the Plovdiv Drama Theatre (with English subtitles). This incredible love tale features a performance by the well known and loved actress – Luisa Grigorova, and you will get to know the work of Staiko Murdzhev, one of the most influential Bulgarian theatre directors.

6. Get a taste of Latin America with the one of a kind tango opera ‘Maria De Buenos Aires’

The weekend will end with the tango opera ‘Maria From Buenos Aires’, a Bulgarian premiere staged by the State Opera Plovdiv. This surrealist tango opera by Astor Piazzolla is an incredible fusion of poetry, classical music and a hint of the Latin-American bandoneon instrument!
