The Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv

1. Plovdiv is the oldest living city in Europe, dating back to 4000 B.C. There is proof that where Plovdiv stands now there was an even older settlement from around 6000 B.C.

2. The Ancient Roman Theatre in Plovdiv is one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world. The theatre is still in use today and a very popular venue for operas, plays and rock concerts. The Opera Open Air festival is held in the theatre every year in June and July.

3. Plovdiv is the richest wine region in Bulgaria. It’s located in the heart of the Thracian Valley wine region and is literally surrounded by wineries. The region around Plovdiv is famous for Red wine production and is home to the popular local grape – Mavrud.

4. Plovdiv was built at the foot of seven hills. That’s why it was called “The city of 7 hills”.

5. One of the oldest clock towers in Europe is in Plovdiv – it was erected in the 16th century.

6. Plovdiv was named European Capital of Culture 2019.

7. Plovdiv is the home town of two sports legends – Stefka Kostadinova who holds the world record for high jump, and the footballer Hristo Stoychkov.
