Description

Saint Marina is an Orthodox church in Plovdiv, dedicated to the worldly Martyr Marina Antioch. It is a metropolitan temple of the Plovdiv diocese. According to Stefan Gerlach, who visited Plovdiv in 1578, there were 8 churches in the city during that time and the main one was in fact Saint Marina. The church we see today was built in the mid 19th century. The masters from the famous Bratsigovo school run by Nikola Tomchev – Ustabashiyski worked on the construction.

Some of the church's most incredible features include the Old Testament murals on its outer walls depicting scenes from Adam and Eve as well as a 17-meter high wooden bell tower. The interior harbours some unique 170-year-old iconstasis. The church also stores a fraction of the holy relics of Saint Martyr Marina as a sanctuary.
